Get out of winter Hunt

Scott talked me into one last hunt. its cold in Minnesota so Scott needed to come and chase some quail in sunny AZ before the bird hunt ended. We had a enjoyable couple days. the first day we worked hard hit the back cuts and were paid off with some good sized coveys to shoot at.

Day two we went to a area I have hardly hit this year and went at some other places backwards and saw 4 coveys in the short time we had to hunt, three of which were big, the last covey of the hunt was the biggest I saw all year it had about 18 birds in it so good news that there are plenty of birds for next years crop. lets hope for a good monsoon and two clutches per hen!

First mearns

These guys met hunting and have gone on many adventures together. I was glad to be a part on one. Wes brought his partner a little brittney and we hit the hills looking for mearns. we ran into some coveys and both guys were able to bag a few birds. Dr. Kreps was able to get his first mearns. The speed of these birds always amazes me and the way they can just zip around a tree. but it sure makes for a good time.

Day Two it was decided we were after another desert bird, I think the good Dr found something he really enjoyed, Gambels quail. we went to four spots and moved four coveys. Some coveys were bigger than others but plenty of running and shooting makes for a great day.

Steve came to town in late January looking to bag all three AZ quail. we started out looking for scaled we went to the place I had a covey or two scouted out and well we saw some tracks and thats about all. Day two we got the mearns we were looking for early then we went to find some gambels got some shots a little bad luck with the gun not firing when it needed to but had some chances. day three we went to every place I have ever saw a scaled quail and it was much of the same drought no grass and no birds to be seen. The city of Tombstone was glad Steve came to town he will look pretty stylish in his new duds. Hopefully with the winter rains we have received, the birds can somehow make a comeback. let it rain....

Back for more quail action the team got reassembled and were ready for another adventure. The first day we were moving coveys everywhere we went. Jeff and Eric shot and shot and got quite a few birds. I of course took a fall hurt my back and was limping the rest of the hunt trying to keep up with the Fastest hikers in the western USA.

Day two we switched hunters and boy if we didn't run into a covey 150 yards form the truck. then we walked and walked and walked. finally after lunch we changed spots and really close to the truck again a big covey took flight and the shots rang out. Lesson learned if your finding coveys by the truck keep moving to different locations instead of hiking for 3 hours in-between.

Day three back with the brothers post for a few hours in the morning and the mearns were scarce we saw one bird I am sure there was a little stop to flush action but thats what we saw. we then raced to a Gambels spot a bit closer to the Airport and right at the end of the hunt the birds finally showed up. a flurry of shots and one big ol hen in the bag. there would be some pictures but I forgot my camera and used Jeff's, so one day we will get em on here.

What Cactus?

What do you get when you have a couple Doctors a Lawyer and a Salesman? One heck of a good time. Thanks guys for keeping me laughing the whole hunt. the first day we went Gambels hunting or as these fellas will call it Cactus picking if I was a bit quicker I could have got almost all of these guys with there pants down picking the thorns out of there legs. we did see a few gambles and were able to get a work out chasing (running after) them uphill.

After a evening around the campfire and a shot of the Knob, these guys were ready for day two, surprised and relieved when we arrived at mearns country and found there was little to no cactus to run into while hunting. We hit it hard and had a couple more good days of hunting with plenty of shooting at the little mearns rockets. it was quite enjoyable to watch the interaction of this group, and I can tell when these guys get together a good time will be had by all.

First Quail of the day

James decided to come back for more this year. He brought a co worker another Airline pilot to enjoy a day in the Mearns woods. We had a pretty good day and were able to connect with a few birds and scare a bunch more. We were able to mix in some mountable birds and they should be adorning the walls of their homes. We saw some nice country and little miss Lilly even turned it on and found a few coveys this hunt.

Mike Kitchens and his nephew came for a New Years Mearns quail adventure. Billy sure took us on one, 787 yards out on point 35 minutes later two nice sized hills climbed we found her on point. Thank you Garmin ASTRO, What a Ground covering Crazy dog. but when there are birds to find well I guess you just follow and hope they are there when you show up. We were able to get both of these guys their first Mearns quail and have a good time doing it.

Billy's locked in Climb on up and get em!!

Rod made his way to So Arizona from Colorado Via a Christmas visit with his Family in Phoenix. The birds seemed more relaxed with the few day rest they had with it Being christmas time. the dogs were amped with the break as well, and were ready to find them. We did find them and Rod was able to connect on his first Mearns quail.

Moon on point. Get ready!!

Bob was able to fly down here and get his mearns hunt when the weather cleared a bit. It was a warm couple days conditions were still pretty dry, quite a bit different than what was left behind at home. We were still able to move some coveys and keep the barrel of the shotgun warm. We found some quail in unusual places. The covey that will always stick in my mind is the one found by Moon under the dead tree on the side of the road on the walk back to the truck.

Star's Back leg is up "I got em boys get ready"

The Baton Rouge Gentlemen Decide they didn't get enough last year so they came back for seconds. The First morning hunt turned out incredible we moved 6 coveys by lunch 3 of which were in view of the truck. Pretty good shooting by both guys we were able to bag enough birds to eat them for lunch the next day Kabob style. The Second day we went for gambles and got a lot of shooting and were able to bag one bird. All in all another great adventure in the Uplands

Ron and Carl are Long time friends, From High School to College to a Quail hunt in So Arizona these guys were ready to get into a few Mearns quail. Ron brought his other hunting partner a very nice looking German Shorthair, and form what Ron tells me is pretty popular with the ladies lucky dog. we did have a great day together working Cuts and canyons and Ol Moon looked like he was 4 years younger finding 5 coveys this day. at the end of the day We were able to get these guys there first Mearns quail. Good job!

Gettin some!

The Take

Lee had it on his bucket list to come from small town Oklahoma to Southern AZ to get a couple species of quail. We struggled but were successful in getting his Gambles, we had a much easier time finding a good amount of Mearns quail. it was a good hunt. I enjoyed the one liners the whole hunt and I still laugh today after a explosion of Mearns and a couple missed shots he tells me he felt like a mosquito in a nudist colony just couldn't decide which one to pick.

Dr. Loe Decided to come back and enjoy our lovely weather and some early season Mearns Quail hunting. he like last year brought along his trusty companions Rusty the Vizsla and his fine English Setter. I was lucky enough to see some of the finest shooting on day one with a 8-10 performance. The shooting went a bit down hill from there but we saw plenty of birds and had a great hunt. That Italian restaurant in Sonoita is calling my name for some more of that world class Italian food.

Saturday looked like a good day to hunt. It was super windy so we decided to hunt mostly in the bottoms and side hills where there was some protection form the wind. We were able to move 7 coveys 1 was Gambles and Glenn was finally able to take one out of that elusive covey. we worked hard and had a great day. Sunday came with a snow storm and COLD. we went out for just a little while only saw one covey that didn't want any part of being shot at.

After thawing out for a few days, and finishing up a San Carlos pig hunt. It was my turn to show Tony around Mearns country. The morning started off rather slow, we moved two birds but Tony was able to bag a good male, with his first mearns quail in the bag, a bit of lunch in our stomach's we were ready to try some new country, we Hiked all the way down to some cliffs only to find a well traveled road at the bottom, feeling a bit let down we decided to B-line it to a different place, on our way back to the truck Moon pointed a nice sized covey and Tony knocked down a couple more birds.

We arrived at the next location and were quickly greeted by a covey of birds we still worked hard, working little fingers but at the end of the day we moved 7 coveys and tony had 6 birds, the last covey decided to not play nice and took off despite Star patiently awaiting our arrival watching the birds fly away.

Three day hunt planed, The Brittany "Hunter"and the German shorthair "Billy" got unloaded off the plane, drove to the guest ranch, and off we went for our mearns hunting experience. it was a tough late season hunt but we were still able to bag a few birds.

These two gentlemen decided it was high time to hit the road and head for a Arizona Quail hunt. Neither of these guys had ever hunted Mearns Quail. They expected to see a little more cactus but the oak grassland suited them just fine. we made it to the spot turned the dogs loose and watched and waited for the first point. Miss Star was on a roll this morning she pointed 3 coveys and Both of these Louisiana boys were able to take their first Mearns Quail.

The Arizona Weather hunt

Dr. Loe and I had a three day adventure. The weather was the big factor on this hunt. We started out with a bang finding 6 coveys by lunch then the wind stopped and it got HOT!!! the next day it stayed hot with no wind we still moved some coveys and I saw some good shots made. The third day it Rained on and off all day made for some tough hunting but we still managed to see 5 coveys. It was a enjoyable few days and I hope your next time in AZ the weather will cooperate.

A couple of A-10's did a fly over they spotted us and came back around super close to the ground. this is the best shot I got, I was in the truck when the action happened.

Post Construction

Team Post assembled and came to Arizona to warm up and see about getting a few quail. None of these guys have ever Taken a Mearns quail before and We had a three day adventure planed to make it happen. Off we go.

The second day turned out to be a little rough my group Jeff and Tanner moved 6 coveys and shot 8 birds. the other group got 10 birds with some solid shooting.

The last day was shortened due to the Flight home. We moved 6 coveys in the hunt and Jeff and Tanner Shot 13 birds, those cliff coveys will stick in my memory forever.

The birds seemed to have found each other again. which was pretty good news for Marty and Scott. We saw some fine bird dogs doing there thing Ten coveys were found all with good numbers 10-15 birds in each. we saw some cool things the bird that would have been the limit was taken by a kestrel in flight after being shot and towering. 15 birds taken and another super nice male will make his way to the Taxidermist.

Day one

Jim and Scotty made there way to Arizona for some fast mearns action. Christmas break came and went. Must of been a ton of pressure on the birds but we still were able to find our fair share. 7 or 8 coveys each day plenty of nice dog work. some good shooting, and a super nice trophy Male was taken on this hunt. I hope to see him after the Taxidermist is done.

Darin was next up Day one 12 coveys found 8 birds down. tons of great videos were made this day the birds were very accommodating. Day Two Billy and Elle were up and what a show 6 coveys found 5 by Billy two in the wide open Darin must be liven right for this kind of thing to happen . A Limit of 8 birds down by 10:30 am what a great day.

These gentlemen and there fine double guns and maybe one semi-auto were able to limit out. It was quite a show watching birds fall out of the air in threes and fours. the dogs were on fire this day finding covey after covey.

Glen and his buddies came to Arizona for their first taste of Mearns quail hunting. Day one we tried our hands on some Scaled quail we did not get any but were able to get a gambles quail and found a covey of mearns in a valley near Tombstone where there was not a tree in miles. headed back to Sonoita and found a couple more coveys of Mearns to end the day.

Day Two we focused on Mearns the firemen were able to bag 23 birds. had a bunch of chances at that elusive limit bird but a good time was had by all anyway.

Russ and his Shorthairs hunted Nov 28. He took his first Mearns Quail and was able to fill his limit. We had a nice day and were able to see plenty of nice dog work and lots of Mearns Quail.
